Study Abroad

The Department considers study abroad an essential component of the language major's academic experience, and we encourage students to spend at least one semester abroad in one of our Washington College programs. These programs are outlined below, but students are encouraged to seek out more detailed information from the faculty and from the Office of International Programs as early as possible as they plan their study abroad experience. While most students choose to go abroad during their junior year, it is possible to go during the sophomore year as well, and a few students wait until the first semester of the senior year.

Students who are pursuing a career goal in foreign language education are advised to begin planning early in order to accommodate the education program to study abroad, since several of the education requirements are taken during the spring semester of the junior year. Talk with Professor Sean O'Connor as early as possible about your plans to study abroad and how they can best be accommodated to the demands of the education program. Students on financial aid also need to inquire early with the Financial Aid Office with regard to what aid is transferable to the study abroad program in which they are interested.

All students who are going to be abroad in a given year are required to complete a Washington College Application for Study Abroad or Off-Campus Programs form. These are available from the Office of International Programs. Completing these forms insures pre-approval of courses to be taken during the abroad program and facilitates granting of credit. It also insures that the student meets with the Director of Financial Aid, whose signature is required on the application form.
