"El que habla dos lenguas vale por dos." ("The person who speaks two languages is worth two.")
Learning a foreign language at Washington College truly opens up a world of opportunities. Our faculty have traveled and studied in all corners of the globe, and we want our students to do the same.
The Department of Modern Languages offers majors and minors in French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, and International Literature and Culture. We also offer classes in Japanese and Latin.
Our courses prepare students to live and work in the global community of the 21st century by giving them powerful tools for communicating and collaborating with people in the pluralist U.S. and abroad. Our courses have three main goals: 1. to foster critical thinking skills through an awareness of the power of language in its many contexts, 2. to provide linguistic training for students to develop proficiency in a foreign language, and 3. to promote intercultural competence for students to communicate effectively across diverse cultural lines. Our graduates pursue successful careers in most fields, including education, international education, journalism, social services, business, international business, economics, government, law, international law, and applied and theoretical sciences.
The Department of Modern Languages will help you prepare for your role in the world after college, whatever, and wherever, that might be.

Treason
Treason, Washington College's foreign language literary and cultural magazine, gives students the unique opportunity to express their interests and stories through languages other than English. Through this publication, students not only have the chance to voice their opinions about certain ideas and topics, but it also allows them to expand their study and knowledge of language.
